Healthy Employees in a Healthy Workplace: Lifestyle Discrimination & Wellness Programs

Description:
Today, more than 40 percent of employers sponsor various programs on dietary and life management and more than half sponsor exercise and fitness programs. Why? Because research has shown a link between a healthy lifestyle and lower insurance premiums, reduced absenteeism and improved productivity while at work. But employers beware: this new trend may have your corporation walking the fine line between HR Nirvana and a courtroom. Teresa Wright, Partner and Litigation Manager for Jackson Lewis’ Washington, D.C. Region Office, explores the legal concerns associated with encouraging healthy lifestyles in the workplace, screening prospective and current employees based on their healthy and/or unhealthy behaviors, and offering wellness programs.

Compliance Crisis Communications

Description:
Research into the impact of crises on businesses proves that companies whose management team performs well will reap the benefits long after the crisis subsides. Likewise, management teams who perform badly will not usually survive and their companies will feel the consequences for many years. Research also shows that the key to effective crisis management is two-fold: advance preparation of systems, processes and resources and a high quality, well trained management team that communicates quickly and openly with key stakeholders throughout the crisis.

Ethisphere Magazine’s “World’s Most Ethical Companies” Methodology

wme hi resThe World’s Most Ethical Companies (WME) methodology analyzes companies that go beyond making statements about doing business ‘ethically’, to translate those words into action. CSR 101 - International Development: Developing a CSR Program Outside of Your U.S. Model

Description:
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) promotes a vision of business accountability to a wide range of stakeholders, in addition to shareholders and investors. Key areas of concern are environmental protection and the well-being of employees, the community and civil society at large. The realization of a connection between the daily operations of a company and the well-being of society is driving a more comprehensive approach to corporate citizenship, including social and environmental responsibility. While these models are slowly taking root in domestic business models within Europe and North America, they are essential in proactive and effective business development in international markets, especially within conflict and post-conflict countries trying to stabilize their economies. The largest global brands are setting high standards of behavior in many aspects of business and wider social conduct, including Intel, Nike, BP, Kellogg, Avon, Dell, Shell, and Toshiba, among others.

While the ideology of CSR is firmly rooted within global business agendas, companies need to move from theory to concrete action to overcome obstacles when developing initiatives in conflict and post-conflict countries. A key challenge facing businesses is the need for more reliable indicators of progress within the sphere of CSR strategies in conflict and post-conflict societies, which is met by integrating Crisis Risk Analysis (CRA). Transparency and dialogue can make a business appear more legitimate when working in these environments but firms utilizing analysis of a region’s culture and politics can incorporate this information into not only their CSR models but also more effective operational models and thus improve their bottom line.

The presentation will begin with a summary of drivers and company benefits followed by a review of Medea Group’s recommendations for initiating or streamlining an existing CSR initiative into the most effective institutional model to support socially responsible business development, particularly in conflict and post-conflict regions.

CSR Drivers

  • The growing role of government within international development sectors
  • Demands for greater disclosure
  • Increased customer interest
  • Increased international pressure
  • Growing investor pressure
  • Competitive labor markets

Company Benefits

  • Improved financial performance
  • Lower operating costs
  • Enhanced brand image and reputation
  • Increased sales
  • Greater productivity and quality
  • Workforce diversity
  • Decreased attrition of skilled and unskilled labor force
  • Reduced regulatory oversight
  • Access to diversified capital from the international community
  • Increased security provided by the local community
  • Political capital within the local marketplace

Discussion topics will include:
The following model allows a company to directly manage its own CSR / CRA agenda while reflecting drivers and benefits. This model will be discussed in more detail during the presentation.

  1. Key assumptions of the business model
  2. Design a framework - the narrative (Identifying the company’s principles, values & policies)
  3. External factors - Specific marketplace/country
  4. Build a framework
  5. Benchmark performance
  6. Assess performance
