A federal judge sentenced four people today for administering unnecessary medical tests on elderly Vietnamese immigrants as part of a multimillion dollar Medicare scheme.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, the four defendants, all Ukrainian immigrants, recruited hundreds of elderly Vietnamese immigrants by offering free check-ups at a bogus clinic in Milpitas. The patients’ personal account information was then used to bill Medicare for tests and procedures that either never took place, or were unnecessary.
In addition to over $900,000 in fines, the sentences ranged from 200 hours of community service with three years probation to two years in prison. A fifth defendant who pleaded guilty is still awaiting sentencing.
